What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis uses guided relaxation, intense concentration, and focused attention to achieve a heightened state of awareness that is sometimes called a trance. It is in the trance state that a person may be more susceptible to suggestion.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Every person is different so every person will experience something different.
Many people have described the feeling as deeply relaxed, whilst others have said it is like an out-of-body experience, whilst others still have said they felt hyper-alert yet completely relaxed.
Hypnosis is not like a light switch, you can become more inwardly aware or more aware of your surroundings at any time.
No matter how you experience your hypnotherapy you will always be comfortable and safe. You will remain in complete control, you will be able to speak and move although it may feel more difficult than usual.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

As all hypnosis is self-hypnosis therefore anyone can be hypnotised, however, some people are more responsive to hypnosis than others. Factors which effect how receptive someone is to hypnosis are often fear or misconceptions surrounding the practice of hypnosis. Contrary to popular belief, often perpetuated on TV and movies, you are in complete control during hypnosis, you will not do or say anything that you do not want to.
Another factor effecting the responsiveness to hypnosis is not having the right therapist. It is important that you feel comfortable and safe with the therapist, if you do not you may find them hypnotising you difficult.
You must want to be hypnotised to be hypnotised, it works best if you really submerge yourself in the experience.

Will you make me do something with which I am not comfortable?

Contrary to popular belief you never lose control during hypnosis, you dictate everything that you do during the session and beyond. You never become unconscious, you enter a state where your conscious mind is deeply relaxed. It is in this state that the unconscious is more open to suggestion. You will not take on any suggestion that you do not agree with. You remain in complete control of what happens, you will not do anything during hypnosis that you wouldn't do under normal circumstances.
